What’s Causing Your Fatigue?

Are you feeling energised, inspired, motivated, creative and hopeful?

Fatigue is a sense of weariness, lethargy and lack of physical energy that you wake up with every morning and live with every day, even after a good night’s sleep.

Fatigue is like a red flag. It is your body’s way of telling you that something is not quite right. Ignoring it won’t make it go away, in fact in may just get worse and possibly lead to illness.

If you’ve been experiencing fatigue, the first thing to do is see your GP. If your GP has ruled out any medical causes for your fatigue, then I can help.

Although Western and Eastern medicine approach the treatment of fatigue in slightly different ways, they both believe that fatigue is caused by internal imbalances in your body. Fix the imbalances and you fix the fatigue.

These imbalances could be on an emotional level, mental or physical level. So an effective treatment approach needs to address all 3 levels.

Western Perspective on Fatigue

In Western Medicine, non-medical fatigue is believed to be caused by one of the following:

Alcohol, smoking, drugs Highly processed diet High acid diet Inadequate water intake Menopause High GI diet Lack of sunlight Poor nutritional diet Stress Excessive intake of coffee & stimulants Obesity Lack of pleasure in life Poor sleeping habits PMT Unresolved emotions Inadequate or excessive exercise Pollution – Noise or Air Workaholism

Eastern (TCM) Perspective on Fatigue

Unlike Western medicine, Eastern medicine looks at specific patterns of Chi imbalance – disharmonies in the energy channels or the meridians. If a Chi imbalance in any of the meridians is left untreated, it will cause fatigue and dis-ease. Their treatment approach is based on locating and correcting these Chi imbalances before they translate into illness and fatigue.

The following provides a quick overview of the different internal energy imbalances that may be contributing to your fatigue.

Spleen or Stomach meridian imbalance causing fatigue
* Easily worried and over-concerned
* Upset by change and tendency to become overwhelmed by detail
* Craving for sweet foods
* Appetite imbalance, either large or lack of appetite
* Hiccups, burping, nausea, poor digestion or vomiting

Heart or Small Intestine meridian imbalance causing fatigue
* Extreme anxiety, emotional unease or lack of joy
* Feeling of powerlessness
* Mental confusion or indecision
* Palpitations or panic attacks
* Vivid dreams, restless sleep, insomnia or nightmares

Kidney or Bladder meridian imbalance causing fatigue
* Cystitis, frequent urination or bladder infections
* Constant tiredness, lethargy or low libido
* Fear and phobias, timidity and lack of confidence
* Learning difficulties, poor memory recall, slow development
* Premature graying of hair, loss of hair, thin hair, spilt ends, lack of shine

Lung or Large Intestine meridian imbalance causing fatigue
* 3am waking
* Constipation
* Dryness of skin, psoriasis or eczema
* Feeling uninspired, stuck or hopeless
* Frequent colds and infection, low immunity

Liver or Gall-bladder meridian imbalance causing fatigue
* Difficulty digesting fatty foods, allergies and low tolerance to alcohol
* Frustration, anger, aggression, irritability and extreme nervous tension
* Having no direction in life
* Nauseous headaches and migraines
* Weak eyesight, sore, tired, dry eyes and spots in front of eyes

Adrenal Fatigue – A Chi Perspective

To understand the importance of the adrenals in your body’s response to stress, let’s start by looking at what your adrenals glands do.
Your adrenal glands are essential to life as they help you cope with all types of stress. As part of the endocrine system, their role is to govern the fight or flight response (alarm reaction) and get you ready for action. They do this by producing several important hormones including cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine.

Is Your Work Causing Sleep Deprivation? – 7 Possible Ways

Do you feel drowsy during the day or evening?

Is tiredness affecting your daily activities on a regular basis?

Do you fall asleep often when you sit down to relax?

Are you irritable with others around you?

If you answer yes to a couple of these, most likely you are sleep deprived.

LONG WORK HOURS

Staying at work way beyond the normal eight hours is the biggest determinant of how much sleep Americans get in a typical day. Overtime is a common occurrence in many industries. In the culture of many organizations, to work just eight hours could actually be considered skipping out early. Mathias Basner, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine studied 47,731 Americans. He found that those who worked longer hours found time for other activities by shortening their sleep hours.

INSOMNIA CAUSED BY WORRY

When you have concerns on your mind about work, it can be difficult to sleep at night. In order to combat this sleeplessness, many people have an alcoholic drink or take sleeping medicines to fall asleep. The problem with these is that you have lighter sleep and don’t have the REM phase of sleep that is so restorative to the brain.

SHIFT WORK

When you are working at times when you normally would be sleeping, you disrupt your circadian rhythm. This rhythm is the cycle your body repeats day after day. Shift work sleep disorder has effects very similar to jet lag. Shift work affects people in various industries: medicine, production lines, technology, telephone service reps, transportation. We also need light in our days to produce the melatonin needed for quality sleep. Having to sleep in the daytime when you are on a night shift deprives you of sunlight.

LONG COMMUTE

Travel time, including time sitting in traffic, can take up a large portion of your day. It could be considered one of the hidden costs to living out in the suburbs. To make up for the loss of those hours, it’s tempting to shorten sleep time. Fatigue caused by the lack of sleep can make the commute dangerous as well as stressful. Sleep-deprived drivers cause more than 100,000 automobile crashes a year (National Sleep Foundation).

LOGGING INTO YOUR OFFICE COMPUTER FROM HOME

What a wonderful technological advancement to be able to log into your work computer from home! Or is it? When does work stop and leisure begin? Working on your sofa with your laptop while trying to participate in family time is not effective for either activity. And how tempting it is to continue work in the quiet of the night to catch up on what you didn’t feel complete from your day! To transition from working at the computer to falling asleep can be difficult also, resulting in an even later start to sleep.

UNHEALTHY EATING

Working long hours and not taking breaks during the day can lead to too much time between food intake and poor food choices. Late business dinners or dinners with clients can mean a very full stomach when heading to bed. This can have an adverse effect on the quality of your sleep.

LACKOF EXERCISE

Exercise is often forgotten with not enough time or energy left over after work demands are met. And exercising too late in the evening can also make it difficult to get to sleep. Getting up early enough in the morning to exercise can be a real challenge when you do not have enough sleep during the night.

If some of these factors are influencing your sleep, you may want to look for solutions that can help you move toward taking better care of yourself. Over a period of time, the effects on you from sleep deprivation build up and can cause a multitude of physical, mental, and emotional problems.

If you have employees, be aware that these challenges to their sleep and other self-care can be very detrimental to their productivity and attendance on the job.

If you are ready to take some steps toward improving your own or employee self-care, a business coach can offer the support you need. Suzanne Holman, MAEd can be your own personal productivity coach! You can find a free assessment, a complimentary self-care starter session, and a weekly Exuberant Productivity journal at http://www.ExuberantProductivity.com.

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism Causing Hair Loss

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland releases excess hormones. This condition is characterized by excess thyroid hormones circulating the blood. There are several symptoms that are produced by this disease, of which directly cause hair loss. These are some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism causing hair loss.

Sleeping disorders: this affects the body’s ability to recuperate and build cells. During rest, the body switches off other functions that expend energy and direct the rest of the energy to functions, such as cell division which helps recuperate the body’s cells. Such cell division will also include cell division of hair follicles. When hair follicles are affected as a result of reduced sleep caused by hyperthyroidism, they begin to lag behind in growth and enter the shedding phase quickly, which then causes baldness.

Hyperthyroidism causes muscle weakness. This can also affect hair growth, as muscle movement during physical exercise helps blood flow to extremities of the body such as the scalp. When the scalp is properly oxygenated as a result of continuous exercise, good hair growth is maintained. However, in the presence of hyperthyroidism, exercise is reduced due to muscle fatigue caused by this condition which in turn will cause reduced hair development and growth.

Hyperthyroidism causes oily skin and acne. Oily skin is associated with the accumulation of bacteria and fungi that can cause skin infections such as acne. Acne can also be caused by the body’s response to the excess levels of thyroid hormone. Oily skin promotes the formation of dandruff which is a major promoter of hair loss. In the presence of dandruff, bacteria germinates on hair follicles causing irritation which usually causes one to scratch. The scratching can result in increased damage to hair follicles which will result in hair patches. in the case of acne when the pimples caused by acne disturb and damage hair follicles, further scratching of the skin with hair can be caused by acne which will result in hair loss as well.

Hyperthyroidism can cause increased appetite and weight gain. When the body is over fed it begins to deposit a lot of fat. Fat reduces the rate of blood flow to active tissues. This will reduce the amount of blood flow to the regions of the scalp. When blood flow to this region is reduced it will trigger hair thinning and hair loss.

Hyperthyroidism causes diarrhea and increased bowel movements. This has the effect of reducing the amount of nutrients that are absorbed by the body during digestion. So, hyperthyroidism affects the efficiency of the digestive system. When the digestive system is not functioning well, several nutrients will not be taken from the diet. If some of these nutrients include the essential elements that are needed in hair development and growth, the body may experience some hair loss problems.

Hyperthyroidism can also cause some irregularities in the menstrual period. It may cause increased menstruation such that the body sheds more elements which can cause hair loss. These are some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism causing hair loss.
